Halifax-area firefighters spent Sunday morning putting out a fire at a docked ship near a former oil refinery.

Stephen Turner, acting district chief for Halifax Fire and Emergency Services, says firefighters were called to a ship docked at the Imperial Oil Dartmouth Terminal at around 6 a.m.

He says the ship's crew initially tried to put out the fire themselves before calling for help.

He was not able to say who owns the vessel or the extent of the damage.

Halifax firefighters and their counterparts with the Department of National Defence spent an hour and a half putting out the fire.

Turner says it is now fully extinguished and the situation is under control.
