South Korea’s leading shipbuilder, Hyundai Heavy Industry (HHI), said that it has signed a deal with a Swiss engine manufacturer to strengthen its capability in the smart ship sector, an area that promises considerable growth potential.

The shipyard said the memorandum of understanding (MOU) calls for utilizing the integrated smart ship solution developed by HHI and its affiliate Hyundai Electric along with the engine diagnostic system and data collection and monitoring platform made by Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd (WinGD).

The cooperation will permit better monitoring of a ship’s engine, such as by checking for malfunctions, and make it possible to provide remote support services to a ship’s crew if the need arises.

Real time monitoring can enhance operational efficiency and safety of a ship.

Hyundai, which has its main yard in Ulsan 410 kilometers southeast of Seoul, said the tie up will allow it to better respond to the e-Navigation effort being pursued by the International Maritime Organization.

The smart navigation initiative is seen by the industry as a way to overcome the current challenges facing shipbuilding markets that have been hit by a drop in new orders.

“There is a growing demand for smart ships with the latest tie up with WinGD to enhance HHI’s competitiveness in this sector,” a Hyundai Heavy source said.
