Suspect in Virginia shooting resigned before killing 12 — official

Inquirer Breaking News - Mon, 06/03/2019 - 10:22
WASHINGTON --- The engineer who shot dead 12 people at a municipal building in a US beach resort city had submitted his resignation hours before the killings, a city official said on Sunday. DeWayne Craddock, 40, had worked as an engineer for the public works department in Virginia Beach, Virginia for about 15 years before carrying out the Friday rampage at his workplace that also left four people wounded. According to the Washington-based Gun Violence Archive monitoring group, it was the 150th mass shooting -- with four or more people shot or killed -- in the United States this year. On Sunday President Donald Trump attended a church service in a Virginia town outside Washi...

Boeing finds wing defect, including among some MAX

Inquirer Breaking News - Mon, 06/03/2019 - 10:12
WASHINGTON --- Boeing announced Sunday that some of its medium-haul 737s, including the 737 MAX 8, could have a defective wing part, but that there had been no reports of flight issues linked to the defect. The American aviation giant, which has been rocked by an unprecedented crisis after its entire 737 MAX 8 fleet was grounded in mid-March, said a subcontractor informed it of problems with a batch of a part involved in deploying the wings' leading edge. The leading edge of an aircraft is key to takeoff and landing because it is meant to improve the wing's drag and therefore the jet's aerodynamics. Boeing said in a statement that it had relayed the defective lot number to a...

Fat chance: Andy Ruiz set to reign as heavyweight champion

Inquirer Breaking News - Mon, 06/03/2019 - 09:44
NEW YORK --- Andy Ruiz Jr. could have passed for any New Yorker, just a roly-poly guy in a too-tight Knicks jersey and sideways baseball cap weaving his way through a crowded sidewalk on his way back to the hotel. But those people were there cheering for Ruiz, outstretched arms for selfies, pats on the back, asking for autographs and a few fans yelling "Mexican pride!" Maybe the boxing world didn't know much about Ruiz before he was nearly booed out of Madison Square Garden as he stepped into the ring against undefeated champion Anthony Joshua. But they learned a whole lot more after he stepped out a champion, posing for pictures with the WBA/IBF/WBO/IBO championship title belts d...

Stan the Man: Wawrinka’s 5-set French win gets him Federer

Inquirer Breaking News - Mon, 06/03/2019 - 09:38
PARIS --- This is why Stan Wawrinka went through two operations on his left knee in the span of a month. Why he dealt with the rigors of rehabilitating that joint. Why he did all the work, on and off the court, required to get back on the grind, to raise his ranking from outside the top 250, to matter again in the sport he loves. So he could participate in, and win, matches like the 5-hour, 9-minute test of excellence, endurance and emotions that the 34-year-old Wawrinka barely claimed against the 20-year-old, caked-in-clay Stefanos Tsitsipas by a 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-4, 3-6, 8-6 score Sunday at the French Open to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the first time in two years. ...

A diminished ‘Godzilla’ still bests ‘Rocketman,’ ‘Ma’

Inquirer Breaking News - Mon, 06/03/2019 - 08:19
NEW YORK - The latest iteration of the Godzilla franchise took over the top spot from "Aladdin" and roared louder than Elton John at the weekend box office, but it still left a notably smaller footprint on North American theaters than its city-wrecking predecessors.   "Godzilla: King of the Monsters," Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment's sequel to 2014's "Godzilla," was brought down to size by poor reviews and middling interest from moviegoers, selling $49 million in tickets, according to studio estimates Sunday.   While still good enough for No. 1, that total was $10-15 million off industry expectations and close to half of the $93 million...
