Nikkei parties like it’s 1989; scales record high

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 02/22/2024 - 12:50
SINGAPORE --- Japanese stocks raced to a record peak on Thursday, breaking levels last seen in 1989 during the halcyon days of the bubble economy, as cheap valuations and corporate reforms lure foreign money looking for alternatives to battered Chinese markets. The Nikkei share average rose about 2% to 39,000 points, above the previous intraday record high of 38,957.44 points touched on the final trading day of 1989. On that day, the benchmark index closed at 38,915.87. The 34 years it has taken to regain its footing is a record, too, for a major market and is a decade longer than Wall Street took to recoup losses from the 1929 crash and Great Depression. X-Men ’97? You bet, I will watch it

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 02/22/2024 - 11:55
Things are about to change for the better for the fans of anything to do with Marvel because when X-Men '97 begins streaming on Disney+, this will be a chance for everyone who was too young during the early 90s to watch even a bit of what made the original X-Men the Animated Series iconic. Can they recapture the magic of what made the original animated series of the X-Men beloved in the first place? From what I saw of the official trailer of X-Men '97 that feeling is a bit there. But I have to watch the episodes first to make that conclusion accurate. Indeed, decades later, the animated series of the X-Men still has its impact on viewers for those who got to watch it when it fi...

Silent brain changes precede Alzheimer’s–study

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 02/22/2024 - 11:23
WASHINGTON --- Alzheimer's quietly ravages the brain long before symptoms appear and now scientists have new clues about the dominolike sequence of those changes --- a potential window to one day intervene. A large study in China tracked middle-aged and older adults for 20 years, using regular brain scans, spinal taps and other tests. Compared to those who remained cognitively healthy, people who eventually developed the mind-robbing disease had higher levels of an Alzheimer's-linked protein in their spinal fluid 18 years prior to diagnosis, researchers reported Wednesday. Then every few years afterward, the study detected another so-called biomarker of brewing troubl...

NEW YORK --- Emily Hollenbeck lived with a deep, recurring depression she likened to a black hole, where gravity felt so strong and her limbs so heavy she could barely move. She knew the illness could kill her. Both of her parents had taken their lives. She was willing to try something extreme: Having electrodes implanted in her brain as part of an experimental therapy. Researchers say the treatment ---- called deep brain stimulation, or DBS --- could eventually help many of the nearly 3 million Americans like her with depression that resists other treatments. It's approved for conditions such as Parkinson's disease and epilepsy, and many doctors and patie...
