Bolton says Trump asked China to help him get reelected

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 06/18/2020 - 06:53
WASHINGTON --- President Donald Trump "pleaded" with China's Xi Jinping during a 2019 summit to help his reelection prospects, according to a scathing new book by former Trump adviser John Bolton that accuses the president of being driven by political calculations when making national security decisions.       The White House was working furiously to block release of the book, whose China revelations carry echoes of Trump's efforts to solicit political help from Ukraine that led to his impeachment. Bolton, Trump's national security adviser for a 17-month period, called Trump's attempt to shift the June 2019 conversation to the U.S. election a stunning mo...

Officer charged with murder for shooting Rayshard Brooks

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 06/18/2020 - 06:47
ATLANTA --- Prosecutors brought murder charges Wednesday against the white Atlanta police officer who shot Rayshard Brooks in the back, saying that Brooks was not a deadly threat and that the officer kicked the wounded black man and offered no medical treatment for over 2 minutes as he lay dying on the ground.       Brooks was holding a stun gun he had snatched from officers but was running away and was 18 feet, 3 inches from Officer Garrett Rolfe when Rolfe opened fire, District Attorney Paul Howard said in announcing the charges five days after the killing outside a Wendy's restaurant rocked a city --- and a nation --- already roiled by the death of Georg...

Wall Street dips as global rally eases off the accelerator

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 06/18/2020 - 06:40
NEW YORK --- Stocks mostly fell in another day of wobbly trading on Wall Street Wednesday, as markets eased off the accelerator following their big rally.     The S&P 500 dipped 0.4% to break a three-day winning streak, after bouncing between small gains and losses for much of the day. Stocks in Asia and Europe made modest gains, while Treasury yields edged lower. Markets have been trending upward this week amid hopes that the worst of the recession may have already passed, and a worldwide rally on Tuesday carried the S&P 500 back to within 8% of its record. But rising levels of coronavirus infections in several hotspots around the world is also raising ...

Trump administration seeking to roll back tech company protections

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 06/18/2020 - 06:29
WASHINGTON --- The US Justice Department proposed Wednesday that Congress roll back long-held legal protections for online platforms such as Facebook, Google and Twitter, putting down a legislative marker in President Donald Trump's drive against the social media giants. The proposed changes would strip some of the bedrock protections that have generally shielded the companies from legal responsibility for what people post on their platforms. "When it comes to issues of public safety, the government is the one who must act on behalf of society at large. Law enforcement cannot delegate our obligations to protect the safety of the American people purely to the judgment of profit-...

BIR targeting Netflix, Lazada, not small-time online sellers

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 06/18/2020 - 05:42
Netflix, Lazada and other big online merchants are the target of tax collectors, Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Deputy Commissioner Arnel Guballa said, allaying fears that the agency was running after small online sellers. Guballa said the BIR had asked the country's online sellers to register to keep track of their number, but it was not collecting income taxes from those who earn P250,000 or less a year. Local subscription fees to Netflix, which is based abroad, include a value added tax which "the government wants to collect under the destination principle," Guballa said at the Laging Handa briefing on Wednesday. The BIR also wants to tax merchants who sell their items via ...

Manila’s restaurants are back in business—with caution

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 06/18/2020 - 05:40
Restaurant owners have been itching to get back to the sorely missed habit of serving people. That's why when the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases allowed the gradual and restricted opening of dine-in service in areas under general community quarantine, many of them immediately opened their doors. Eric Dee, COO and president of Foodee Global Concepts, started to reopen Tim Ho Wan, Hawker Chan, Mesa and Pound. Kam's Roast, LlaoLlao, Sunnies Caf, Bench Cafe and Tsuta will follow suit. "We were very prepared as we have been practicing for a bit, so the transition has been smoother than expected," Dee said. "Some LGUs (local gover...

Patron of PH hoops

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 06/18/2020 - 05:35
It would not be a stretch to credit Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco Jr. for drawing up the most successful blueprint for Philippine basketball to date. "It was sustainable at that time and it delivered results," said former national youth standout Jong Uichico. But Uichico noted that at the heart of the program, underneath the layers of logistics, philosophies, coaching strategies and player development, was the driving force of its godfather. "He was very, very nationalistic," Uichico said. "Above anything else, he loved being Filipino." Cojuangco, the former ambassador and San Miguel Corp.'s chair and chief executive officer, died on Tuesday night. He had just turned 85 on June 10...

When the dribblers of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas' (SBP) "E-Gilas" squad take the court in the Fiba Esports Open on June 19, they won't be physical underdogs against international opponents. "In my many years in basketball, I never imagined the game will be played where height is not might," SBP executive director Sonny Barrios said. "You don't need brawn or height; you only need to play smart and you will excel." The Philippine squad won't be disadvantaged athletically either. The tournament will feature players controlling their avatars in an NBA 2K game. And all Filipino avatars are graded 99, the highes...

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 06/18/2020 - 05:30
Ikomai Japanese Restaurant is popular for out-of-the-box menu curated by Japanese chef Hideki Saeki and executive chef James Antolin. Saeki's dishes are reflective of Nagoya where Saeki hails from. He highlights ingredients Nagoya is known for, like the use of miso. He also takes pride in his execution of tebasaki (Nagoya fried chicken wings), one of Ikomai's bestsellers. He and Antolin explore and blend cooking styles, combining the best of Nagoya with the flavors of Tokyo or Osaka, to create unique dishes. The menu, says Antolin, is progressive, never boring. The restaurant has a new line of do-it-yourself (DIY) cooking kits. The little brown boxes come with clear, precise ...

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 06/18/2020 - 05:26
The additional 10-percent import duties temporarily slapped on certain oil products amid the COVID-19 crisis so far raised P1.49 billion in additional revenue for the government. Data provided by Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III on Tuesday showed that the implementation of Executive Order No. 113 yielded an additional P1.1 billion in tariff and P130.1 million in value-added tax (VAT) from imported crude oil since May. Issued by President Duterte last month, EO 113 temporarily modified the rates levied on imported crude oil and refined petroleum products effective May 6. The higher rates will remain for as long as Republic Act No. 11469, or the Bayanihan to Heal as One A...

Retracing 30-year journey of 14th-century traveler through food

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 06/18/2020 - 05:25
Travel stories should always make some mention of local food. Food, as we all know by now, says something of the culture and environment of the place. Ibn Batutah (IB) is considered the greatest Arab traveler; his 30-year journey in the 14th century brought him to most of the Islamic world in Central Asia, Southeast Asia, China and India. IB was from Tangiers, Morocco, and in "Travels with a Tangerine" (Random House, 2004), Yemen-based British writer Tim Mackintosh-Smith retraces the "Tangerine's" medieval age travels. In the chapter on Alexandria, Mackintosh-Smith delved into the food of the port city of Damietta in Egypt. "Damietta was one of the culinary high po...
