Online daters looking for more than endless swiping

Inquirer Breaking News - Sat, 02/22/2020 - 08:38
LONDON --- While taboos surrounding online dating are long gone, some of today's app users are sick of the endless swiping and virtual pen-paling that leads nowhere when it comes to long-term relationships, according to industry leaders who are responding with new ways to get users off their phones and out meeting people in the real world. David Vermeulen is one such leader. His Inner Circle, launched in 2012, is more closely curating users looking for meaningful connections, and he's hosting offline events in cities around the globe to help make that happen among his more than 2 million members. He said he saw a big shift in online dating attitudes toward the end of the decade as...

South Korea becomes newest front in shifting virus outbreak

Inquirer Breaking News - Sat, 02/22/2020 - 08:25
SEOUL, South Korea --- Cases of a new virus swelled Friday in South Korea, making the country the newest front in a widening global outbreak centered in China and now reverberating elsewhere. South Korea said two people have died and 204 have been infected with the virus, quadruple the number of cases it had two days earlier. Schools were shuttered Friday, churches told worshipers to stay away and some mass gatherings were banned. The multiplying caseload in South Korea showed the ease with which the illness can spread. Initial infections were linked to China, but new cases in South Korea and Iran --- where there have been four deaths --- don't show a clear connection to travel...

Grief, anger and calls for action after shooting in Germany

Inquirer Breaking News - Sat, 02/22/2020 - 08:19
HANAU, Germany --- Gokhan Gultekin's juggling act was in many ways typical of Hanau's Turkish community: taking care of frail parents, hustling to work at a late-night cafe, making some cash on the side at a second job and attending Friday prayers at the mosque across town. On Friday, Gultekin's friends mourned him at his house of worship, two days after "Gogo" was killed in a racially motivated shooting rampage that shook Germany and prompted fresh calls for a crackdown on far-right extremism and anti-immigrant scapegoating. "We grew up in here in these streets, ran through the playgrounds, laughed together," said Omer Demir, who described his recently engaged, 37-year-old fri...

This is one pardon Trump should consider

CNN Top Stories - Sat, 02/22/2020 - 07:17
Since pardons are something of a topic du jour, Mr. President, I have a simple request. I'm fairly certain you've heard of former NFL star quarterback Michael Vick. We also all noticed the news reports that you just gifted a commutation for an alum of "The Celebrity Apprentice" who was accused of shakedowns involving a children's hospital and pardoned a former police commissioner convicted for tax fraud and lying to the government. So please, sir, hear me out -- I have a far more deserving candidate for your leniency consideration.

Weinstein jury indicates it is split on most serious counts

Inquirer Breaking News - Sat, 02/22/2020 - 07:16
NEW YORK --- The jury in Harvey Weinstein's rape trial indicated Friday that it is deadlocked on the most serious charges, but the judge told the panel it must keep working. In a note to the judge late in the fourth day of deliberations, jurors asked if it was permissible for them to be hung on one or both counts of predatory sexual assault while reaching a unanimous verdict on the other charges on their complicated verdict sheet. Weinstein's lawyers said they would accept a partial verdict, but prosecutors said no and Judge James Burke refused to allow it. He sent jurors back to deliberate for a few more minutes before letting them go home for the weekend. They'll resume Monda...
