A Greek product tanker has been damaged and one crewmember reportedly killed in an attack in the central Arabian Gulf, according to multiple open-source and security consultancy accounts. The strike location is far from the Strait of Hormuz, consistent with an apparent Iranian strategy to attack targets outside of the American security umbrella around the Musandam Peninsula.
According to UKMTO, a tanker was attacked overnight Wednesday and hit by two projectiles at a position about 50 nautical miles north of the Qatari peninsula, hundreds of miles west of Hormuz. In the agency's initial account, the extent of damage and the status of the crew were not immediately clear. UKMTO did not release the vessel's name, consistent with its general practice for breaking-news alerts.
Open-source intelligence analysts have identified the ship as the Greek-operated Velos Sapphire, a 2007-built product tanker of about 75,000 dwt capacity. Velos Sapphire's AIS movements correspond closely to the reported incident location and timeline; its AIS signal has been dark since 2313 hours UCT on Wednesday night, about the same timeframe reported to UKMTO.
Unfortunately, multiple open-source and security-consultancy sources have reported that one crewmember died in the attack. The vessel operator has been contacted for comment.
Velos Sapphire is part of a 10-ship fleet run by a midsize tanker company in Athens. In recent weeks, the vessel called at Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia and made the contested Hormuz crossing three times - a contravention of Iranian orders if done using the southern, American-operated route through the strait.
Velos Sapphire does not appear on Iran's "Persian Gulf Strait Authority" blacklist of so-called noncompliant ships, the roster of about 240 vessels designated as priority targets for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy. However, one fleetmate - the tanker Velos Amber - is on the high-risk list.
