15 Indonesian Seamen Rescued After Ship Collision in Japanese Waters

Jakarta. Fifteen Indonesian crew members of a Korean ship that collided with another one in waters off Japan arrived safely at the Busan Port in South Korea on Thursday (02/08), the Indonesian embassy in Seoul confirmed.

On July 26, two South Korean vessels, the Longline 803 Tongyeongho and the 101 Keumyangho, collided off the coast of Japan, in which the latter reportedly sank with 18 Indonesian crew members on board.

Fifteen of them survived the accident, three others are still missing.

Siti Sofia Sudarma, the embassy's deputy chief of mission, said in a statement that she had discussed the rights of the crew members with the ship owner and the sending agency in South Korea.

"They have agreed to pay the wages, give them compensation and also plane tickets to return to Indonesia," Sofia said.

The seamen will fly back to Indonesia on Thursday afternoon, she added.

The embassy is still coordinating with South Korean authorities in a search operation to find the three missing Indonesians.
