The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) issued an urgent warning on Monday night after steel shipping containers were dislodged from the MSC Chloe just before midnight on Tuesday‚ August 7‚ about 21 nautical miles (39km) east-south-east of Durban.

Off Durban, awaiting the berth on arrival from Port Elizabeth, the ship was caught in huge swell, rolling some 30 degrees both sides. 13 containers went overboard, 25 containers on board were damaged.

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) issued an urgent warning on August 13 with regard to the steel shipping containers. Ships‚ boats and yachts sailing south of Durban have been warned to be on the lookout for the shipping containers thought to be floating in the sea after being swept from the deck.

According to maritimebulletin.net, the safety authority said none of the containers were believed to contain any listed “dangerous cargo” or marine pollutants. It was believed that the containers were loaded with a variety of cargo‚ including citrus fruit.

Aug 14 Update: On Aug 13 was towed back to Tenerife, reportedly with mechanical failure. As of afternoon Aug 14 was berthed in Tenerife, most probably under repairs.
