Iloilo City—A cargo ship carrying cement figured in an accident off the coast of San Jose, the capital town of Antique province.
Information from the Police Regional Office (PRO-6) reported that cargo ship M/V Star Liberty drifted almost 300 meters from the shoreline of Barangay 4 Monday.
The cargo ship that was carrying cement from Cebu province was anchored at San Jose Port since last week.
But on Monday, the ship’s anchor couldn’t withstand the strong waves of the habagat (southwest monsoon) and the ship drifted towards the rocky part of the sea.
When the ship’s engine failed to start, the captain decided to abandon the ship that had 22 crew members.
Of the 22 crew members, 12 were slightly injured. They were treated at the nearest hospital.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Antique province is checking if there’s an oil spillage from the abandoned cargo ship.
