SIBU: Having a career as a seafarer can bring in good income and improve the living standard of one’s family, says political secretary to the chief minister Abu Seman Jahwie.

He added people need to change their perception that a seafarer’s job is only about tying boxes or pulling ropes when onboard.

“As a former assemblyman, I went to places like longhouses and villages and I saw the lives of those whose sons work as seafarers changed for the better.

“For example when I entered a room in a longhouse, there are many pieces of modern equipment inside and I asked the owner what his son does for a living and they answered seafarer,” he recalled.

He said this when officiating at a ‘Passing Out of Marine Apprentice’ ceremony at Sibu Islamic Complex here for 25 trainees who had completed ‘Marine Engineering Rating Preparatory Course’.

According to Abu Seman, the number of seafarers in the country is still insufficient to meet the demand.

On the course, he said it trained seafarers to be professional and highly skilled.

“Of course when they are highly skilled, they can handle bigger ships and eventually earn good income that can change their living standard,” he added.

He also reminded the trainees that every job has its own challenges but with commitment and passion, they will be able to overcome the challenges.

The course was organised by Pelita Maslaut Sdn Bhd.

Also present were PMSB managing director Masni Amit, general manager Mohamad Nazim Masni and National Anti-Drugs Agency Sibu head Lu Ting Ping.
