A crew member onboard a Celebrity Cruises ship reportedly killed himself last week, just one day before the voyage was scheduled to arrive in Singapore and his contract was set to expire.
According to Crew-Center.com, a young Suite Manager identified as Anton Ilichev from Ukraine was found dead from an apparent suicide in his Celebrity Millennium cabin on December 6.
The Celebrity ship had been sailing a 14-night Southeast Asia cruise from Hong Kong to Singapore when Ilichev died. He had reportedly worked for the cruise line on several contracts in the past.
Ilichev’s latest contract was due to end when the Celebrity Millennium docked in Singapore, and he was scheduled to begin a regularly scheduled vacation.
In a report from Jim Walker of Cruise Law News, the suicide of crew members on cruise ships is hardly rare. Over the last several years, reports have surfaced of employees on multiple lines hanging themselves and jumping overboard.
Walker calls on cruise lines to offer overworked crew members better mental health services to help bring the unfortunate trend down.
