Chinese executive from COSCO Shipping leaps to his death from Sunworld dynasty hotel in Taipei
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- A Chinese business executive from China's state-owned COSCO Shipping Lines Co., Ltd. fell to his death from the window of the 15th floor of a hotel in Taipei City in an apparent suicide.
The 39-year-old man, identified as COSCO managing director Jia Libin (賈利賓) apparently jumped from the window of his room on the 15th floor of the Sunworld Dynasty Hotel in Taipei's Songshan District, reported Apple Daily. At about 2 a.m. this morning, Jia was found to have fallen into the hallway of a restaurant on the first floor and suffered many broken bones and serious head injuries with no vital signs, reported Liberty Times.
Hotel staff immediately implemented CPR and called for an ambulance, which rushed him to a hospital, but he was soon declared dead due to the severe head trauma suffered during the fall. Police say that surveillance video showed Jia falling from the 15th floor to the first floor, and they sent officers to his room to collect evidence.
When police searched his hotel room, they found no sign of a struggle, but discovered that Jia had left a nine-page suicide note, according to local media reports. Police found that Jia's note mentioned that he had had visited the U.S. in 2011 to seek treatment for depression, and said that he had felt he had reached a bottleneck in his life, reported CNA.
On the last page of the letter, Jia apologized for making the decision to take his life and said hoped his relatives and friends could live a good life, before closing with the English word "FAREWELL," according to local media reports.
When Jia arrived in Taiwan on Dec. 18, he listed "enterprise exchange" as the purpose of his visit and was originally slated to leave Taiwan on Dec. 28, according to ETtoday. Police have contacted Jia's relatives and are going to continue to review surveillance camera footage to clarify the details of the incident.
COSCO Shipping Lines Co., Ltd. is headquartered in Shanghai and is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The company mainly transports oil and coal along China's coastal areas.
