MANILA - A low pressure area or potential storm off the Pacific Ocean is moving closer to the Philippines as another one is already in the country, the state weather bureau said Monday, dousing parts of the archipelago amid the Christmas merriment.

Spotted 1,515 kilometers east of Mindanao, the weather disturbance is likely to enter the Philippine area of responsibility on Christmas morning, Tuesday, and may intensify into a storm, said PAGASA weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio.

Meanwhile, another LPA already inside the country will bring occasionally moderate rains to large swaths of the archipelago on Christmas Eve, he said in a Facebook video.

Among areas where rains may spawn floods and landslides are the Visayas and Mimaropa, Bicol, Davao and Caraga regions, PAGASA said in an advisory.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rains due to the amihan or northeast monsoon, the cold air usually associated with the Christmas season, the weather agency added.

The second LPA, located 80 kilometers northwest of Cuyo, Palawan at 3 a.m., is unlikely to intensify into a storm. It will leave PAR on Tuesday, said Aurelio.

During last year's Christmas holidays, at least 200 were killed when back-to-back storms Urduja and Vinta spawned floods and landslides.
