One Myanmar seaman drowned yesterday, while seven others are missing after a Taiwanese-flagged cargo vessel sank off the northern part of Taiwan, news reports say.

Five other sailors, including four seamen were rescued in a pre-dawn accident that occurred Wednesday off the coast of China’s Zhejiang Province.

China’s state news agency Xinhua reported that there were 15 people on board the vessel when it sank. It added 14 of the crew were Myanmar nationals while one was Taiwanese.

But U Hein Htet Soe, director of Myanmar’s sub-department of seafarer administration of the Department of Marine Administration, told the BBC that only 12 Myanmar sailors were aboard the ship.

He added the three Myanmar companies that supplied the crew for the cargo ship were Sun Maritime, Leader Marine Oversea Co and Ocean World.

“We have heard that two seamen arrived in Taiwan. Other two seamen saved by a fishing boat arrived in China. One was found dead. Rescue teams are searching for the other missing seafarers,” U Hein Htet Soe was quoted by BBC as saying.

Xinhua said the 80-metre cargo ship named London’ departed from the city of Kaohsiung.
