THE Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) is investigating why a vessel carrying 585 passengers and 46 crew members conked out at sea on Saturday morning, Jan. 6.
Maritime Specialist Mardon Martin of Marina said that Mv Our Lady of Good Voyage of Medallion Shipping encountered engine trouble while sailing off the South Road Properties in Cebu City at 7:30 a.m.
The vessel that left the port of Dipolog City on Saturday night, Jan. 5, and was sailing toward Pier 4 in Cebu City when the engine conked out. It was later towed by a tugboat of Andrick of Golden Shipping Lines.
Lt. JG Mike Encina said a passenger on board the vessel informed them about the condition of the Mv Our Lady of Good Voyage.
Encina said they directed the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) station in Barangay Tinago, Cebu Cebu City to monitor and assess the vessel.
He said that with the help of the PCG, the vessel was towed and was able to dock safely at Pier 4 at 9 a.m. All the passengers and crew members were safe, Encina said.
Martin of Marina said Medallion Shipping must file a marine protest in connection with the incident so Marina can determine the seaworthiness of the vessel and avoid endangering the life of passengers and crew in the future.
She said they will not give clearance for the vessel to sail again until it is certified to be seaworthy. (EOB)
