Surplus supermarket stock helps East End seamen feed needy

A Poplar seaman’s charity has received surplus food from a supermarket chain to help feed those in need.

Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest (QSVR), in East India Dock Road, Tower Hamlets, makes meals for its residents using donated food provided by the borough’s Tesco shops.

“These donations can benefit up to 200 people per day in some way, many of whom have limited means and struggle to get by,” said QVSR chief executive Alexander Campbell.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to Tesco on behalf of the charity and all those we support.”

The scheme runs in partnership with food charity FareShare’s Community Food Connection programme.

The programme is in place in all of the supermarket’s UK shops, with more than 41,000 meals donated in Tower Hamlets alone, the supermarket says.

Shoppers have handed out more than one million meals in London since the scheme launched in February 2016.
