WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A ship on its way to the Port of Wilmington has a mess on board.
From photos, you can see several cargo containers have toppled over.
Bethany Welch, a spokeswoman with the Port of Wilmington, says the Helsinki Bridge is on its way from Boston to Wilmington. She said an “incident” happened on its way to the Port of Wilmington, but could not elaborate. Welch referred us to the US Coast Guard.
The ship left the sea buoy around 6:30 a.m. and is expected to arrive at the port today.
USCG Chief Petty Officer Jeremy Thomas said the ship had rough weather, which caused the containers to topple over. Rough weather is not just from the wind, but waves which cause a ship to pitch and roll.
The total number of affected containers is not available at this time. The ship is allowed to offload the collapsed or damaged containers at the Port of Wilmington.
Thomas said the ship’s crew will give a full report on any missing containers before they leave. Details on what cargo the ship was carrying was not yet available.
