ABU DHABI, 31st March, 2019 (WAM) -- The UAE is taking steps to secure its position as a maritime power, announcing it will open the new National Centre for Maritime and Navigation Information before the end of 2019.

This comes as part of a national strategy for maritime transport, being created in partnership with other federal stakeholders, and will include maritime transport data, as part of efforts to stimulate the growth of the maritime industry.

Commenting on the opening of the new centre,Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Balheif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Chairman of the Federal Transport Authority - Land and Maritime, said, ''The new centre will be launched in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Ports Company and in coordination with other national ports.'' He also noted that a modernised draft of the maritime law is being proposed, to keep abreast of latest developments in the industry.

The law, he explained, will give the private sector an influential role in the sector and provide competitive incentives to attract more investors.

Answering a question from Emirates News Agency, WAM, about development of Emirati human resources in the maritime sector, Dr. Al Nuaimi said the FTA pays special attention to offering training and improving the skills of Emiratis, adding that an agreement for technical cooperation was signed with the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in Egypt to open a campus in Sharjah this year.

Additionally, the Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy, part of Abu Dhabi Ports Company, was launched in partnership with the Australian Maritime College and Australian Maritime Safety Authority, to offer internationally recognised and approved advanced training programmes.
