Seafarers can stay put in Cebu to process papers

SEAFARERS who need to secure or renew their documents to work in domestic or foreign vessels no longer need to go to Metro Manila.

This, after the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) devolved functions to its regional offices.

Marina 7 Director Marc Anthony Pascua said they now issue seaman’s books by appointment online and certificates of proficiency as well as administer exams to seafarers and ship officials here in Cebu.

Less money, less time

The exams will be held on the fourth floor of the new Marina building in Sitio Sudlon, Barangay Lahug in Cebu City once the building is completed. In the meantime, the exams are being held at the Qimonda IT Center where the Palace of Justice is located.

“We conduct a whole-day examination once a month for desk officers and engine officers in Cebu. We cater to 500 seafarers per week,” Pascua said.

Under this setup, seafarers will spend less money and time to secure their documents, he said, adding that they can even do their transaction online.

Meanwhile, Pascua said maritime schools in Cebu have produced talented and hardworking graduates.

“Marina and the Commission on Higher Education are jointly inspecting school facilities and class programs needed by the shipping industry worldwide,” Pascua said. (EOB)
