Environmental protection unit and safety inspectors on Saturday morning rushed to the vicinity where a foreign cargo vessel ran aground in Lauis Ledge Light House waters off Talisay Cebu.
Citing information from the Philippine Coast Guard-Cebu, GMA News reported that MV ARIKUN with 18 crew members, and loaded with 4,210 tons of wheat, and having 287,167 liters of fuel got stuck in shallow waters near the light house.
At about 7:30 a.m., PCG dispatched environmental protection unit, safety inspectors, rescue personnel, and medical team to verify the incident and render assistance, said coastguard Central Visayas.
Initial information showed that the vessel was bound for the Cebu International Port (CIP) when the incident took place. The PCG is still determining the nationality of the ship's crew members.
Information from the office of Commodore Ronnie Gil Gavan, Commander of Coast Guard District Central Visayas, indicate that no oil spill has so far been observed around the incident area, but monitoring and assessment, as well as an investigation into the incident are ongoing. —LBG, GMA News
