This year at London International Shipping Week (LISW), The Mission to Seafarers will be co-hosting a Conference with three other welfare charities which aims to get to the heart of some of the industry’s most pressing welfare issues.
To the event on 11 September, sponsored by and held at Inmarsat offices, the Mission has invited leading names from across the industry to share their thoughts on the impact of technology on crew wellbeing and explore how the industry can meet the needs to the seafarers of the future.
The Conference will also include a keynote speech from Dr Grahaeme Henderson, Vice President, Shipping & Maritime, Shell on ‘How Shipping Can Thrive: Today, Tomorrow and in the Future?’. His presentation will examine the importance of seafarer wellbeing to business performance, and share examples of the positives and challenges of technology application.
Ronald Spithout, President of Inmarsat Maritime, said: “Technologies do not operate in a vacuum, and extracting their full potential is dependent on the officers and ratings who work and live at sea. With its broad scope and global audience, LISW offers an ideal platform to build on the progress made enhancing welfare among the people driving our industry. We are delighted to be co-hosting an event dedicated to crew welfare with the four major maritime charities and ISWAN.”
The Revd Canon Andrew Wright, Secretary General, The Mission to Seafarers, added: “I would like to extend my gratitude to Inmarsat for its continued support of our work here at The Mission to Seafarers. As the global shipping industry continues on its trajectory towards an increasingly digitalised future, we will need to work together as an industry to ensure we are developing the tools and support networks that allow our seafarers to thrive in their place of work.”
