Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle will preside over a holy mass at 9 a.m. Sunday, September 29, at the Paco Arena in Manila to mark the 24th National Seafarers Day in recognition of the work done and sacrifices of Filipino seafarers.
This year’s theme “Marinong Filipino-Kababaihan: Palakasin sa Industriya,” highlights the sacrifices of women seafarers who work away from their families in order to provide for their needs.
The Church said Filipino seafarers are able to help spread the Word of God as their work brings them to different parts of the world.
“Through the Apostleship of the Sea, the Church, in turn, provides for the spiritual needs of seafarers particularly those who are experiencing loneliness, work-related problems, and depression. The Church also provides support to the families left behind by the seafarers,” Church officials said.
In 2013, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said, there are around 367,000 Filipino seafarers around the world.
The Vatican’s Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development Cardinal Peter Turkson, earlier, called on the faithful to pray for the welfare of the more than 1.5 million seafarers, fishermen, and other maritime workers around the world.
