The government targets to train at least 10,000 seafarers in the next five years with a target of having more women join the male dominated profession.

Shipping and Maritime Affairs Principal Secretary Nancy Karigithu noted that among the challenges that women face in the blue economy sector is the mindset of the workforce and the equipment that is not female friendly.

Kenya joined the world in celebrating the international maritime day that was marked in Mombasa County where speakers decried the low number of females who are involved in maritime activities.

PS Karigithu said the government is keen on correcting this by offering capacity building opportunities to women.
