PENSACOLA, Fla. (WEAR) — A 46-year-old man has been charged after a report alleges he attacked and wounded his ship captain.

An affidavit says Robert Odom, a crew member on a commercial fishing vessel, attacked the vessel’s captain with a pellet gun and long-blade knife as the vessel was in the Gulf of Mexico off Pensacola.

At the time of the incident, the ship was approximately 20 – 26 nautical miles south-southeast of Perdido Pass, with a captain and two crew members.

While fishing on Sept. 27, the report claims Odom shot the captain in the chest with a pellet rifle and then, after a struggle, stabbed the captain twice, causing “immediate, profuse bleeding.”

Coast Guard and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers responded to a call for help.

The report says the captain was airlifted by helicopter to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.

Odom was taken into custody by the United States Coast Guard Investigative Service.

Odom is being held by the U.S. Marshals Service pending a detention and probable cause hearing on Thursday, October 3.
