SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and Denmark have agreed to expand cooperation to enhance global marine navigation systems and develop technologies for automated ships, Seoul's oceans ministry said Friday.

South Korean Oceans Minister Kim Young-choon will sign a memorandum of understanding with Brian Mikkelsen, Danish Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, in a ceremony in Seoul later in the day.

The two nations first laid the groundwork for maritime cooperation in May 2012, and the new agreement calls for joint efforts for e-Navigation and automated ships based on artificial intelligence and big data technology.

E-navigation is a major initiative pushed by the International Maritime Organization to harmonize and enhance marine navigation systems. Automated ships are next generation vessels with no crew members onboard that will be commanded from a shore operating center based on censor, radar and satellite tracking systems.

Denmark is very strong in the global maritime industry and includes such names as Maersk Line, the world's largest container shipping company.
