Rescuers identified the seamen as Rene Fernandez, Ryan Parungao, Raymond Cotiangco, and Arnold Española. But ship captain Charlemagne Tambago has remained missing, said Philippine Coast Guard personnel who picked up the four distressed seamen.
Citing incident information, the Ilocos Norte PCG station commander said the cargo vessel capsized due to rough seas, 56 nautical miles from Calayan Island last December 19 at about 11 a.m.
Rescued crewmen said the ship captain was able to issue an "abandon ship" call, prompting them to jump ship. But they said they had lost sight of him until crew members of a passing ship came and saved them.
Also, they said they had been drifting for four hours before M.V. Fomento II, enroute to China from Singapore, passed by the area.
After the rescue, MV Fometo II captain contacted the PCG station in Currimao, which sent a boat to fetch the distressed Pinoy seamen, who are now undergoing medical checkup.
