According to reports, a veteran Sandy Hook ship pilot lost his life when he fell during a boarding of an inbound containership at the Port of New York and New Jersey, on Monday, December 30.
Specifically, the USCG reported that in light of the accident they responded with units from the New York Fire Department and New York Police Department Harbor Police after the pilot fell while boarding the U.S.-flagged Maersk Kensington at 4:30 a.m.
The USCG has now begun an investigation to understand the circumstances around the fatal fall.
Following, the Sandy Hook Pilots Association issued a statement informing of the accident. They revealed that the pilot suffered injuries after falling by the accommodation ladder. He was transmitted to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
Prior to the incident, Captain Sherwood had been piloting vessels in and out of the Port of New York & New Jersey for over 35 years. The incident is being investigated by the United States Coast Guard

In a similar accident, two weeks ago, the Republic of the Marshall Islands Maritime Administrator issued an investigation report on the fatality of a Pilot while disembarking a ship and attempting to transfer from the pilot ladder to an escort tugboat off the Port of Tuapse, Russia, in the early morning hours of 30 December 2018.
