One person was killed and another was wounded when a dry cargo ship exploded in the northern province of Sinop on Feb. 28, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

The blast reportedly occurred due to trapped gas in the boiler room of the vessel, which was anchored 15 miles off Sinop.

The “Mümtaz Amca,” a Liberia-flagged vessel, was taken four miles off the coast of Sinop following the explosion.

Rescue teams were sent to the area but an air ambulance was unable to pick up one injured crew member, identified as Kazım Sucu, due to strong winds.

Another injured crew member, identified as Ragıp Yanak, was rescued by a maritime police boat and has been referred to a state hospital.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), fire-fighters, and police teams are still present on the shore conducting rescue work.
