Margao: Maina-Curtorim police on Thursday arrested a 23-year-old resident of Moll, Sao Jose de Areal, on charges of abducting and raping a 13-year-old girl on Wednesday afternoon. The police managed to nab the accused during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.

Police said the accused was a seaman and had come to Goa recently. On Wednesday afternoon, while the survivor was walking home from school, he offered her a lift on his motorcycle. As he was an acquaintance, the survivor didn’t suspect anything amiss and accepted his offer. However, instead of dropping her home, police said he took her to a hillock in distant Ambaulim, near Quepem, and raped her.

As the girl had failed to return home from school, a missing person’s report was filed at the Maina-Curtorim police station and a case of kidnapping registered .

“A massive search operation was conducted around the place where the girl was last seen. Late Wednesday evening, the survivor was found in an unconscious state on the hillock by locals of Ambaulim and had injuries on her body. While she was shifted to hospital, movements of all suspects in the area were checked. Several suspects were rounded up and finally the accused was nabbed from his house. He later confessed to the crime,” South Goa SP Arvind Gawas told reporters.

The accused, Gawas said, assaulted her and even banged her head on the ground after she tried to resist his advances. As the victim became unconscious, he abandoned her and fled the scene.

The man was arrested under provisions of the Indian Penal Code, Goa Children’s Act and Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act and remanded in 10 days’ police custody.
