PAGADIAN CITY, Philippines —Ozamiz City Mayor Sancho Fernando Oaminal has confirmed the city’s first positive coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19).

Oaminal posted on his Facebook page that he just received a call from the Mayor Hilarion A. Ramiro Sr. Medical Center (MHARS-MC), informing him that one of its patients had tested positive for COVID-19.

“He is not from Ozamiz City but from within Misamis Occidental,” Oaminal said, referring to the patient.

“We will update you for further details,” the mayor said, assuring the public that city officials were still on top of the situation.

An Inquirer source said the patient is a 45-year-old seaman who had traveled in Thailand and arrived in Misamis Occidental on March 14. He started having fever and his blood pressure shot up on March 21.

Three days later, he was brought to the hospital.

Oaminal reminded the public about the importance of social distancing.
