Cargo vessel runs aground in Bohol

TAGBILARAN CITY - A cargo vessel ran aground in the waters off Mabaw Reef Marine Sanctuary in Barangay Ubujan in this city on Tuesday night.

According to Seaman Second Rodel Astronomo of the Philippine Coast Guard-Western Bohol, M/V Seaborne 7 owned by Seaborne Shipping Lines Inc. was heading to Tagbilaran port from Manila Harbor.

Astronomo said the incident happened around 11:45 p.m. after it failed to notice the unlighted buoy within the vicinity waters of Mabaw Reef in the village of Ubujan.

"Due to poor visibility (that) it touched the bottom of the said reef," said Astronomo.

The cargo vessel reportedly have 22 crew members onboard and was loaded with container vans from Manila.

The cargo ship was not damaged and there is no trace of oil spill in the grounding area.

However, an investigation is still conducted to determine the extent of the damage it caused to the corals. -- BAP, GMA News
