MANILA – The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) on Friday lifted its temporary suspension on the acceptance of applications for the approval of maritime training courses and assessment centers.
In its Advisory 2021-01, MARINA repealed both Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) Advisory 2017-16, titled "Moratorium on the Approval of Maritime Training Courses", and STCW Advisory 2018-02, titled “Moratorium on the Accreditation of Assessment Centers (AC) and Approval for Conduct of Assessment of Competency”.
“Existing and newly formed Maritime Training Institutions (MTIs) that intend to offer programs or courses shall be required to comply with the requirements prescribed,” it said in a statement.
Aside from MTIs, existing and newly formed ACs that intend to offer competency assessments are also required to comply with requirements prescribed by the advisory.

“In addition, MTIs and ACs that intend to offer programs or courses and assessment of competency shall likewise comply with the existing MARINA circulars, policies, rules and regulations,” MARINA said.
It warned MTIs and ACs against submitting fraudulent documents or using “cloned, imitation, or pirated equipment and simulators” or face possible disapproval of their application for accreditation.
Submissions, MARINA said, must be sent via email at [email protected].
"MARINA assures the public that it continuously commits to producing globally competitive seafarers by maintaining the quality of maritime education and training in the country despite the rising number of confirmed cases of Covid-19," it said. (PNA)
