The National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) signed a partnership with the Agro-Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFCP) Incorporated to enhance the quality of the Professional Development Course (PDC) for Filipino seafarers.
NMP is the sole state-owned maritime training and research institute.
The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed between NMP and AIFCP ensures that Filipino seafarers obtain the competencies necessary in ensuring their employability onboard vessels through effective maritime instructions that are following international standards.
The enhanced PDC training is compliant with the requirements of Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping Convention (STCW) as amended in 2010.
It likewise advances the capabilities of maritime faculty.
The partnership was done in response to the request of the AIFCP for in-house training on
IMO MC 3.12, as part of the professional development of their instructors. As agreed by both parties, the training is slated for 25 January 2020 – 05 February 2020 in Davao City.
Accordingly, NMP ensures the conduct of approved training programs per its policies, rules, and standards according to international practices in maritime education and training.
“This collaboration is an affirmation of NMP’s capability in terms of expertise and facilities needed in the effective delivery of quality training for maritime faculty. Rest assured that instructors who will handle the course are appropriately qualified based on the staff requirements of the Course Framework approved by the Marina”, says NMP Executive Director Joel B. Maglunsod.
Meanwhile, NMP continues to conduct face-to-face training exclusively to the seafarer-
trainees residing within Region VIII, imposing strict implementation of the Maritime Industry Authority’s (Marina) approved Post-Enhanced Community Quarantine Operational Plan and other health and safety protocols as required by the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and local government unit (LGU).
Stakeholders who wish to validate the authenticity of their seafarers-employed with NMP issued certificates may visit www.verify.nmp.gov.ph. Also, those interested in research undertakings may visit its website and access the e-Research Information System Portal which is designed to disseminate NMP completed researches, present the Research Agenda, and engage the industry stakeholders to collaborate in the research activities.
Further, NMP encourages seafarers registered with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to avail of the Seafarers’ Upgrading Program (SUP) and Skills for Employment Scholarship Program (SESP) which entitles the beneficiary to receive financial assistance for training costs.
