Turkish seafarer dies on Hamburg DW off Port Klang in Malaysia

One seafarer has died and another three were in a critical condition after reportedly inhaling ammonia on an LPG carrier off Malaysia.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said the incident happened on the 35,058-cbm Hamburg DW (built 1993) in international waters off Port Klang on Tuesday.

The deceased was a 62-year-old Turkish national, while two other Turks and an Indian aged between 28 and 50 were taken to hospital.

The Bernama news agency said the MMEA was alerted by a shipping agent late on Tuesday night.

Members of the Selangor MMEA, together with the hazardous materials unit of the Malaysian fire and rescue department, headed out to the carrier.

The vessel had anchored south west of Pulau Selat Kering in the early hours of Wednesday.

The three critical crew members were transferred to Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital.
Post-mortem due

The same hospital will carry out a post-mortem examination of their colleague.

The country's health ministry and police have been notified of the incident.

Hamburg DW's manager TGM Deniz of Istanbul could not immediately be contacted.

The vessel has no port state control detentions on its record.

Last month, two South Korean stevedores died in a possible gas asphyxiation incident on a Greek bulker.
