THE P500-million MV Lite Ferry 88 was formally launched yesterday by Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) Administrator Rey Leonardo Guerrero and Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Lloyd Dino.

Guerrero is a retired general, being the former chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Lite Shipping President and CEO Lucio Lim Jr. said this is in response to the call of President Rodrigo Duterte in his first State of the Nation Address to modernize the local passenger fleet.

“This is our first small contribution towards the long journey to modernize our local fleet. This is the only passenger ship to be classed by the Lloyds Register of London,” Lim said.

Aside from Guerrero and Dino, the other attendees were Department of Transportation (DOTr) Assistant Secretary for Maritime Fernando Perez, Sebastian “Basti” Duterte, Cebu Port Authority (CPA) General Manager Angelo Verdan, Deputy Marina Administrator Nanette Dinopol-Villamor, Marina 7 Director Venancio Vero, Betty Medialdea of Pioneer Insurance, Cebu City Police chief Supt. Joel Doria, and Kenneth Cobonpue and Glenn Soco of the Regional Development Council. (EOB)
