The ship of the future will require more sophisticated skillsets from seafarers than is the case today. That’s the view of more than three quarters of readers who have voted in our latest online survey, MarPoll. With just over two weeks till the vote closes, there are already a host of interesting comments left by Splash readers on the topic of the future seafarer.
More crew will be “remote” seafarers, operating from onshore, one reader observed. Another voter noted that the seafarer of the future will require a different skillset. “Rather than an engineer they will need some one with more computer skills,” the voter commented.
The question posed is one of nine topical questions carried in our latest surveys with other topics looking at the markets and ship finance among others.
“Almost all industries will require more sophisticated skillsets, shipping will be no different,” said another reader, one of more than 400 to have had their say in the quarterly poll so far.
Another pertinent comment left stated: “The more you leave control of vessels to a computer, the more you need to have a better A to Z understanding of the algorithms behind it. It is the classic example of voyage calculation gone wrong due to a wrong entry in the template. A seasoned professional should know after the result if the system has been fed something wrong or not. I.e. gut feeling and human eye will still need to overlook all processes and their results.”
To have a vote on MarPoll takes just two minutes and there is no registration needed. Results will be carried in the next issue of Maritime CEO magazine, due to be distributed at Posidonia in Athens. To vote, click here (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7BFFGH8).
