Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 27) — The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Regional Office IV has suspended the passenger ship safety certificate of MV Asia Philippines, which caught fire near Batangas Port on Friday.
"Further, said vessel shall be subjected to a thorough safety inspection by MARINA inspector/surveyor in order to determine her seaworthiness condition prior to lifting of suspension, if warranted," MARINA said in a letter dated Aug. 26.
All 85 people onboard the roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) vessel -- 47 passengers and 38 crew members -- were rescued. Meanwhile, a 44-year-old woman was injured.
MARINA-Region IV said a ship's safety certificate could be suspended when it has been involved in any maritime incident, which "may put into question the integrity of the hull and its integral parts and other affected machineries/appliances."
The Philippine Coast Guard on Saturday said an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
