THE National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) has created two new training courses for crew members manning passenger ships.

The Tacloban-based government maritime training and research center introduced the Safety Training for Personnel Providing Direct Service to Passengers in Passengers Spaces (STPPDSPPS) and the Passenger Ship Crisis Management and Human Behavior Training (PSCMHBT).

Both training courses were developed under the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention.

NMP Officer in Charge Mayla Macadawan said the STPPDSPPS aims to train seafarers on emergency communication with fellow crew and passengers, the proper use of personal life-saving equipment, and procedures for boarding and exiting passengers with particular emphasis on accommodating those with disabilities or special needs.

Meanwhile, the PSCMHBT covers various competencies, including organizing shipboard emergency procedures, optimizing resource usage, controlling emergency response, managing passengers and personnel during emergency situations, and establishing effective communication.

The training courses were accredited by the Maritime Industry Authority on Nov. 23, 2022 and will be valid for the next three years.

"These new courses further demonstrate [our] dedication to meeting the evolving needs of the industry. The expanded training offerings will benefit the maritime industry by providing personnel with the necessary knowledge and skills to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers on board ships. It will also ensure compliance with international regulations," Macadawan said.
