Three seafarers of Chinese nationality were pronounced dead onboard a bulk carrier after they were found unconscious in the ship’s cargo hold.

The Liberian-flagged ship transporting Coal was scheduled to dock at Hualien’s Hoping Port when the incident occurred in the waters off Hualien in eastern Taiwan.

At around 8 PM on 6th September, The Coast Guard, Hualien Fire Department and National Airborne Service Corps responded to a call, informing three crew members were unconscious in the ship’s cargo hold.

According to local reports, the deceased crew members died from suffocation after inhaling toxic gases in the cargo hold.

The ship was later informed by the Coast Guard to seal off the crew member’s accommodation compartments and to be prepared for a visit from Forensic experts and labour officials.

The families of the affected crew members have been informed about the unfortunate event, and permission will be taken from them to conduct autopsies of the deceased.
