Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 10) — Three Filipino crewmen were hurt after a Russian missile hit a cargo ship in Ukraine's Black Sea, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said Friday.
Among those injured were the ship's captain, third mate, and engine trainee, the DMW said. They were at the ship's bridge when the missile hit, the agency confirmed on Thursday.
The DMW earlier reported that four Filipino seafarers were injured — the ship's captain, able seaman, deck cadet, and the ship's electrician.
But it issued an updated advisory saying three were hurt and that "[t]he Philippine manning agency had misreported the number of injuries in the initial information they submitted to the DMW."
Both the DMW and the Department of Foreign Affairs said all of the crewmen are out of danger and their families have been informed about the incident.
CNN reported that according to Ukraine's Operational Command South, the missile struck a Liberian-flagged civilian vessel as it entered the Black Sea port's Odesa region, killing the ship pilot and injuring four others, including a port worker.
The ship was supposed to carry iron ore to China, Ukraine's Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said in a post on Facebook.
CNN Philippines correspondent Tristan Nodalo contributed to this report.
This handout photograph taken and released by the Operational Command South in Odesa region on November 8, 2023 shows damages in a civilian vessel flying the Liberian flag that Ukraine said was hit by a Russian missile while entering a port in the Black Sea region of Odesa, injuring the ship's crew and killing a harbour pilot. Since a UN-brokered deal guaranteeing safe passage for civilian ships collapsed in July, both Kyiv and Moscow have ramped up military activity and attacks in the Black Sea.
