THE Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) strengthens its presence in Maasin and deepens collaboration with the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to enhance maritime safety and economic growth.
Marina has inaugurated its extension office in Maasin, Southern Leyte, to improve accessibility for industry stakeholders.
During the ceremony, MRO-8 Regional Director Cheryl Pascua emphasized the significance of opening Marina services to industry stakeholders in Maasin, improving accessibility and boosting support for local seafarers and fisherfolk.
The event, held on Feb. 25, 2025, was led by Pascua, alongside Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) First District Engineer Manolo Rojas and Rep. Luz Mercado. Officials from the local government unit of Maasin, Coast Guard District Eastern Visayas, Philippine Ports Authority, and shipowners attended the ceremony.
Meanwhile, Marina signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Bangsamoro Maritime Industry Authority (BMarina) on Feb. 28, 2025 to enhance maritime safety, security and operational efficiency in BARMM. The partnership focuses on regulatory oversight, policy implementation and capacity-building programs to improve local shipping and vessel safety.
Marina Administrator Sonia Malaluan emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating, "This MOA stands as a testament to the trust and collaboration between our agency and the Bangsamoro Maritime Industry Authority. We reaffirm our commitment to a prosperous, peaceful and self-sufficient Bangsamoro region."
The agreement aligns BARMM's maritime operations with national and international standards, ensuring compliance and efficiency. It is also expected to boost economic development by enhancing connectivity, facilitating trade and creating employment opportunities. With these initiatives, Marina continues to expand its reach and reinforce maritime governance, advancing both local and national maritime objectives.
