SANTA Clara Shipping Corp. is facing a show cause order from the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) over alleged passenger overloading and poor sanitation.

The order, issued in line with the president's directive to ensure safe and comfortable travel, cites multiple violations involving MV Steve Albert. On May 10, 2025, the vessel arrived at Matnog Port at 1:05 p.m. and departed at 7:20 p.m., overstaying by more than three hours on its Matnog–Allen route in violation of Marina Advisories 2023-08 and 2023-11.

The ship was also reportedly carrying passengers beyond its authorized capacity, and its restroom was found to be in unsanitary condition. These findings were supported by a report from the Philippine Coast Guard Station Matnog and complaints received directly by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

Marina has directed the shipping company to submit a written explanation within 10 working days from receipt, justifying why no penalties should be imposed. Failure to comply will be taken as a waiver of the company's right to be heard and may result in sanctions.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon stressed that such violations must not be tolerated, reaffirming the government's commitment to passenger safety and welfare. The order was signed by Marina Region 5 Director Maximo Bañares Jr. and was also sent to the Coast Guard District Bicol and Coast Guard Station – Sorsogon.
