SAN ANDRES, Quezon – A total of 119 individuals were rescued from a passenger-cargo vessel that caught fire due to an electrical short circuit in a crew cabin in Barangay Mangero here on Wednesday night, Aug. 27.

The Philippine Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog reported that MV Monreal owned by Kho Shipping Lines was enroute from Port of Aroroy, Masbate to Port of San Andres, Quezon with a total of 66 passengers and 22 crew members and 16 rolling cargoes when the fire struck.

The blaze was promptly contained, and power was later restored by a licensed electrician onboard.

The CGMP San Andres, together with the PCG, Bureau of Fire Protection, police, and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office prepared for possible search and rescue.

The vessel safely docked at San Andres Port at 10:49 p.m., where authorities facilitated the disembarkation of passengers.
MDRRMO personnel conducted medical checks and confirmed all passengers and crew were in good condition.

The PCG has detained the vessel, instructed the master to submit a marine protest, and collected sworn statements from passengers and crew.

The Maritime Industry Authority Region 4-A was notified for the suspension of the vessel’s passenger ship safety certificate while the Maritime Safety Services Unit–Southern Tagalog's Marine Casualty Investigation and Vessel Safety Enforcement Inspection Team has been directed to conduct a formal investigation.
