The Philippines, through the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the competence and resilience of Filipino seafarers, particularly through upskilling on alternative fuels and emerging technologies, to support a just maritime transition.
“The Philippines pledges to continue giving voice to seafarers, to champion sustainability, and to uphold the principles of safety and inclusivity in global shipping,” declared DOTr Assistant Secretary for Maritime Villamor Ventura Plan in a statement on November 27.
The country reinforced its role as a global maritime leader at the 34th International Maritime Organization (IMO) General Assembly, and in line with the country’s bid for re-election to the IMO Council for 2026–2027, Asec. Plan stressed that MARINA is intensifying efforts to strengthen seafarer competence.
This includes training programs on alternative fuels, new technologies, and the capabilities needed for the global transition toward greener and smarter shipping.
The country likewise reaffirmed its support for IMO environmental initiatives, including ballast water and biofouling management, marine litter reduction, and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships.
