The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) and Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement International (Philippines) Corp. (BSM Philippines) have formalized a partnership aimed at accelerating the maritime sector’s shift toward greener operations and strengthening training programs for Filipino seafarers.

Under the memorandum of understanding (MOU) they signed, the two parties committed to collaborate on regulatory frameworks that support environmental sustainability, safety, and the mental health wellness of seafarers.

Together, Marina and BSM Philippines will work on training programs and research initiatives covering human element best practices, alternative fuels, renewable energy applications, and emission reduction measures.

The partnership also covers the adoption of energy-efficient technologies and green fuels training.

“Through this MOU, Marina and BSM aim to work together to support the green transition in the maritime sector while ensuring that the welfare, competence, and resilience of seafarers remain at the center of this transformation,” Marina Administrator Sonia B. Malaluan said.

For its first year, the partnership is set to roll out several activities: a Training of Trainers program for the revised Basic Training – Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (BT-PSSR), provision of learning facilities, delivery of methanol training for Marina personnel, and the development of a dedicated mental health course for seafarers.

“Partnerships like this are essential as our industry navigates a period of profound transformation. The maritime sector is entering a new era, one defined by the need for sustainability, innovation, and stronger collaboration between industry and regulators,” BSM Group Representative Guengoer Ates said.
