The Government Shutdown's Effects on the Maritime Industry

On December 22, 2018, a continuing resolution passed by Congress to fund a portion of the U.S. Government into the 2019 fiscal year expired and was not renewed, resulting in a partial federal government shutdown. The shutdown is having significant regulatory impacts which will become more severe and then debilitating over time.

Chinese general cargo ship Zhong Xing 689 sank near Pingtan of Fujian yesterday, while it was sailing from Shantou to Pingtan.

The ship sank shortly after the crew found water ingress in the ship cabin. The 12 crew had to jump into the ocean after they found there was no time to get on the lifeboat.

A fire that broke out on board two Tanzanian-flagged cargo tankers travelling off the coast of Russia has claimed the lives of ten people.

Around ten crew members were found missing following the incident, which took place in the Kerch Strait near Crimea, according to Russia’s Novorossiysk maritime rescue centre.
