Putin: Trump impeachment ‘far-fetched,’ Senate will acquit

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 12/19/2019 - 19:52
MOSCOW --- Russian President Vladimir Putin called the U.S. impeachment process "far-fetched" Thursday, making a seemingly obvious prediction that Donald Trump will be acquitted in the Senate. Putin said Thursday at his annual news conference in Moscow that the move is a continuation of the Democrats' fight against Trump. "The party that lost the (2016) election, the Democratic Party, is trying to achieve results by other means," Putin said. He likened Trump's impeachment to the earlier U.S. probe into collusion with Russia, which Putin downplayed as being groundless. Putin noted that the impeachment motion "is yet to pass the Senate where the Republicans have a...

A man whose body was stored inside his wife's chest freezer for more than a decade may have planned his end to be that way, because keeping his death a secret allowed his wife to keep collecting his government benefits. Paul Edward Mathers, who would have been 69 years old today, was found dead last month inside the freezer of his recently-deceased wife Jeanne, as per Fox affiliate KSTU on Nov. 25. His body has been there since February or March 2009. Police found Mathers' body after checking in on Jeanne, 75, who lives in a retirement community in Utah, United States. Auth...

Russia plans to file appeal against Olympic ban

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 12/19/2019 - 19:42
MOSCOW --- Russia has signaled it will file an appeal against its four-year Olympic ban due to World Anti-Doping Agency sanctions which President Vladimir Putin on Thursday branded "unfair." The Russian anti-doping agency's supervisory board voted Thursday to file an arbitration case with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland. WADA last week ruled Russia had manipulated doping laboratory data to cover up past offenses. The decision must be approved by another panel of Russian sports and anti-doping figures, but that seems a formality. Most of the panel's members, including the Russian Olympic Committee and Russian Paralympic Committee, have said they want an appeal....

Inquirer Breaking News - Thu, 12/19/2019 - 19:05
A new auction world record for an item of sports memorabilia was set Wednesday when the original Olympic Games manifesto sold for $8.8 million at Sotheby's, the auction house said. The 14-page manuscript was written in 1892 by Pierre de Coubertin, a French aristocrat and athletics enthusiast known as the "father" of the modern Olympics. It achieved nearly nine times its pre-sale estimate of $1 million following 12 minutes of intense bidding at a sale in New York, Sotheby's said in a statement. "Today's record result stands as a testament to Pierre de Coubertin's vision of more than a century ago, and the reverence with which the Olympic games are still held," said auctioneer...
