"I specifically asked for Christian, because he suits our run-and-gun style," NorthPort coach Pido Jarencio told the Inquirer over the phone, even though there was a tinge of sadness in him in lett...

Are researchers ‘crazy’ to engage in their work?

Inquirer Breaking News - 7 hours 25 min ago
I can't help but feel low after reading a recent comment of a senator who looked down at research as not worth the budget being allocated for it by the Department of Agriculture. She was quoted as saying: "Why does it seem like all your budget goes into research? You're crazy over research. What will you do with this research?" This mindset pretty much sums up the sad state of science and technology in the country, why we're slowly slipping down in our global competitiveness, why our gifted scientists are shifting to more pragmatic means to put food on their table, rather than engage in potentially breakthrough researches that can fulfill a serious need in the country as well as th...

Inquirer Breaking News - 7 hours 26 min ago
BACOLOD City---In terms of investment and resources poured into the sport, the Philippines isn't anywhere near China's level in football. But that doesn't mean that the Azkals aren't entertaining thoughts of pulling off a giant upset when they face the Chinese on Tuesday night in the joint Fifa World Cup and AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers at Panaad Stadium here. Not since the Azkals stunned North Korea, 3-2, in Manila in their World Cup qualifying match more than three years ago has the Philippines created a shocking result in the competition. For coach Scott Cooper, the Azkals would need to rise above their limitations to come up with a winning result against a team ranked 59 places ...

Inquirer Breaking News - 7 hours 26 min ago
MANILA, Philippines --- Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo on Monday turned down the dare of a commuters' group, Kongreso ng Mananakay, for him to take public transportation for six months. "That doesn't matter. I only gave in to shove it in their faces that it's not true that we have not experienced commuting using public transport," Panelo told reporters at Malacaang. He also stressed that government officials did not have to ride in public utility vehicles (PUVs) to see the suffering of ordinary Filipinos. "Even if you don't ride one, you will still see it every day, when you see queues at jeepney or bus stands. You will see them struggling to hail a ride, especially d...

Where to go for mystical tours in the Philippines

Inquirer Breaking News - 7 hours 27 min ago
Last Oct. 10, I was invited to speak about mystical tourism during the annual convention of Asia Pacific Travel Association held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila. I discussed the two types of culture of the Philippines and mystical tourism. "Mystical," according to the dictionary definition, refers to "something mysterious, or having a divine or sacred significance that is beyond human comprehension. It may also refer to something being supernatural, occult, magical, or of metaphysical significance." Mystical tourism refers to visiting places or witnessing phenomena considered to be mysterious or strange or magical. There are mystical tours in some Wester...

Inquirer Breaking News - 7 hours 28 min ago
Betty Johnson, who has worked on General Motors assembly lines in Michigan and Tennessee for more than 34 years, said she knew a strike by the United Auto Workers union would mean personal sacrifice. Nearly 50,000 GM hourly employees have been striking since September 16 in a walkout that has halted production at 31 factories and led to thousands of layoffs at auto supply companies. [embed]https://twitter.com/GM/status/1182634455292436481[/embed] "It's not easy," Johnson said. "I've got $45 left from my $250 in strike pay. Trump Wants to Mediate ‘Deal’ Between Turks and Kurds

Inquirer Breaking News - 8 hours 8 min ago
US President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that Washington could mediate between Turkey and Kurdish groups after Ankara launched a military offensive against Kurds who until recently were backed by the United States. "We have one of three choices: Send in thousands of troops and win Militarily, hit Turkey very hard Financially and with Sanctions, or mediate a deal between Turkey and the Kurds!" Trump tweeted. "I hope it's going to be the last one," he told reporters later. This added third option was the latest twist in the president's changing stance regarding the fate of Kurdish militias that until recently were fighting alongside US troops in Syria.
