Seafarer massacre unfolds in the Black Sea amid blind hits on merchant ships

July marks the deadliest month yet, with violence continuing into August as Russia and Ukraine strike each other’s shipping

More seafarers have died in the Black Sea in July than in the entirety of the Ukraine war before it, as the two sides escalated direct attacks on each other’s shipping to unprecedented levels.

Deniz Iscileri, a Turkish seafarer union that keeps track of the lethal maritime incidents, counted 23 dead and more than 40 injured seafarers in attacks against unarmed civilian commercial ships last month.
